Chiropractic focuses on repairing the effects of disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system.  These effects can manifest as back pain, neck pain, headaches, and arm and leg pain, though many other ailments stem from neuromusculoskeletal disorders.

richmond chiropractic careA chiropractor possesses broad diagnostic skills that enable them to provide comprehensive patient recommendations.  They advise patients as to the rehabilitative and therapeutic exercises needed to treat the symptoms of disorders, as well as offering advice on lifestyle changes involving exercise, diet, and nutrition that can help a patient embrace a completely healthy lifestyle.  These doctors practice a hands-on, drug-free approach to health care and wellness that includes patient evaluation, diagnosis, and chiropractic treatment.

The most common chiropractic therapeutic treatment is known as a “spinal manipulation” or “chiropractic adjustment.”  The purpose of this treatment is to, by manually applying a controlled force onto restricted joints; restore the mobility of the joints.  Often, a joint has become immobile because of a tissue injury – something that can happen because of a trauma, or something that can happen over a period of time.  Repetitive improper lifting, poor posture, and substandard furniture (such as beds, office chairs, and more) can all cause tissue injury, as can a single traumatic incident like a car accident or fall.  When the tissue is damaged, the sufferer experiences pain, inflammation, and diminished function.  Spinal manipulation restores the lost mobility, easing pain and inflammation, and allows the tissue to heal.

These spinal manipulations, or chiropractic adjustments, rarely cause discomfort to the patient, though they may experience pain or soreness that is similar to the soreness associated with exercise.  This soreness is usually soothed with ice and rest, and resolves within 12 to 48 hours.  Also, a patient who undergoes a treatment plan that includes regular chiropractic adjustments will find that soreness will occur less frequently the more often the patient is adjusted.

Certain conditions lend themselves to chiropractic adjustments more than others.  For example, a patient with lower back pain will likely be advised to undergo spinal manipulations as the primary method of treatment.  For patients who have other health conditions, chiropractic adjustments may be included in a patient’s care plan to complement or support their existing medical treatments.

A doctor of chiropractic will usually examine a patient, order certain laboratory tests or diagnostic imaging, and perform other diagnostic tests to determine if chiropractic adjustments are an appropriate treatment for the patient.  If the doctor determines that chiropractic treatment is not the best option for the patient, he or she will refer the patient to an appropriate health care provider.
